An Apology
Well dear readers, it would appear that I have an apology to make.
Back in March when I first announced that I was starting a print magazine, I promised that it would not be replacing my presence here. However, in the two months that have passed, you may have noticed that my writings have been few and far between. Indeed, upon reflection, it would seem my earlier confidence was a bit premature.
These past few months have been incredibly busy for me and the rest of the Trivium Magazine1 team. I have found that when not writing, emailing contributors, managing subscriptions, and finalizing layout, I don’t have much of a desire to spend more time on my laptop, and thus The Beauty of Simple Things has been a bit neglected.
In lieu of time on Substack I have been busy making homemade kombucha and sourdough, soaking in the springtime sun, helping multiple friends move, hosting trivia nights at the local coffee shop, and going down a delightful children’s literature reading kick. In addition to frolicking about with Peter Rabbit, I’ve enjoyed A Bear Called Paddington, The Little Prince, Leaf by Niggle, and The Dark Word: And The Creatures Lurking There. Some seasons of life require big fat Russian novels, and other seasons demand mischievous bears and bedtime stories. Apparently, I am currently in the latter.
Looking back on the past few months, I must note that April came and went in all its Virginia glory. T.S. Eliot certainly wasn’t thinking of the Shenandoah Valley when he claimed April as the cruelest month. This year each day brought with it new beauty and wonder. To me, even the rainy days of April seem magical here in the Valley.
With each passing month I am reminded that each day, week, season, and year brings exciting new adventures and challenges for each of us, but the Lord is with us through them all, guiding our feet, and calling us to Him. In the midst of the noisy, darkened world, we can find hope and joy in knowing that Truth, Beauty, and Goodness shall prevail. Indeed, all shall be well.
A Poem
One day while in the midst of working on the magazine, I started to jot down the following words, which ended up becoming a sort of poem version of The Beauty of Simple Things.
Sunrise warms
Flowers grow
Treetops rustle
Roosters crow
Biscuits bake
Dishes gleam
Counters sparkle
Teacups steam
Children laugh
Raindrops fall
Breezes whisper
Songbirds call
Sunset glows
Pages turn
Prayers murmured
Candles burn
